Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov Saturday expressed regret over the lack of practical anti-terror steps from Georgia.

"Regrettably, apart from general statements, containing promises to do away with terrorism, nothing is being done in practical terms. Recent events show that international mercenariesfeel in the Pankisi Gorge as at home," said Ivanov.

However, he said that Russia is ready to forge friendship with Georgia.

"We are prepared to help fighting international terrorism, which poses a threat not to a smaller but, on the contrary, to a larger degree, for Georgia itself. But the choice is for Tbilisi to make," said the minister.

The difficult relations between Moscow and Tbilisi have been further soured by the fighting, which continued for the eighth dayon Saturday between Russian border guards and Chechen rebels trying to cross into the breakaway Russian republic of Chechnya from neighboring Georgia. Russian officials said that over the past week fighting Russian forces had killed 16 Chechen fighters while losing eight of their own men.

Georgia President Eduard Shevardnadze has consistently refused Russian calls to stage a join military operation in Pankisi to dislodge the alleged Chechen bases.
