A senior Iranian military official on Sunday said Iran's armed forces have enough defensive readiness to confront any foreign threats, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.

The armed forces should improve their combat readiness against any threat and empower themselves with new military strategy, Mohammad Ali Jafari, ground forces commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was quoted as saying in a militaryceremony.

Jafari warned that Iran's enemies are trying to find ways to harm the Iranian government with its increasing military strength and modern communications technology.

The military official stressed people's role in maintaining security, while adding that national solidarity and defensive readiness are two other major factors in securing victory over enemies, referring mainly to the United States and Israel.

The United States and Iran have severed relations since 1980 after Iranian students stormed the American Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and took its staff hostage for 444 days.

Earlier in the year, US President George W. Bush accused Iran ofbeing part of the "axis of evil," which attempted to develop weapons of mass destruction.
