Chinese rookies Hong Lina/Lin Xianlin claimed the women's title and newly-formed Hayden Jones/Kirk Pitman of New Zealand won men's event at the 3rd Asian Beach Volleyball Championships Sunday in Yingkou.

In a battle against rain, wind and Thailand's 1998 Asian Games winners, Hong Lina/Lin Xianlin denied M. Pangka/R. Ariaisuk and clinched the final victory 2-1 (21-19, 19-21, 16-14) in 56 minutes.

The 19-year-old Hong, who later was named the Best Women Playerof the championships, said: "To be honest, the Thai pair are more experienced and skillful than us. We just concentrated on the match and tried to do our best."

Another Chinese duo Sun Jing/Hao Bo came third with Kamoltip Kulna/Jarunee Sannok from Thailand fourth.

Jones, 27 and Pitman, 20, who have been training together for three months, fought back from one set down by beating Zabuslayev Pavel/Vorobyev Dmitriv of Kazakhstan 2-1 (17-21, 21-13, 15-10) in 49 minutes.

As a third-time Asian Championships participant, Jone said: "I am very, very happy for the title. The rain and wind didn't botherme at all, it instead brought us confidence because we always practice at home in such weather. I felt familiar with it."

Jones, who injured his fingers on the right hand and stayed in the hospital last night, said what in his mind was the match.

"I didn't think of my injured fingers. I didn't feel pain during the match. Now I am the winner of the competition, I don't care if any other part of body gets injured. I am so happy," said Jones, who was voted Best Men's Player later.

Chinese Zhao Chicheng/Teng Maomin collected the bronze medal after they beat Indonesian Agus Salim/Koko P Darkuncoro 2-1.

A total of 47 teams from 13 countries and regions competed in the three-day Asian Beach Volleyball Championships, held in the second largest port city in Liaoning province on Sunday.
