Bolivian Congress Elects Lozada as New President

Bolivian Congress on Sunday elected Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada as the country's new president for the next five years, reports reaching New York said.

Bolivian Congress on Sunday elected Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada as the country's new president for the next five years, reports reaching New York said.

Lozada, 72, who had been Bolivian president from 1993 to 1997, won by a 84-43 margin in Sunday's congressional vote, defeating his rival Evo Morales, an Indian coca farmer.

The two men were the leading contenders in the June 30 election.As neither of them got the needed simple majority of votes in thatelection, the newly elected Congress had to choose a president from the two.

Lozada in fact secured his victory in the congressional vote over a week ago when he formed an alliance with the leftist formerPresident Jaime Paz Zamora.

Lozada leads the centrist National Revolutionary Movement, and his running mate Carlos Mesa, a 53-year-old journalist, was elected vice president in Sunday's congressional vote.
