Majority of Iranians agree that discussions should be held with Washington, despite the fact that they consider the United States as an enemy of Iran, the newspaper of Iran News reported on Monday.

According to two polls conducted by the ministries of culture and information, 71-78 percent of those polled favor holding discussions with the United States, while 65-70 percent do not consider holding such talks to be humiliating.

However, the two polls, which were requested by the parliament'sNational Security Commission, showed that only 26 percent of the participants view the United States as a likable country.

The surveys also showed that more than 75 percent of the respondents consider the United States to be insincere.

Speculations have been rife over the past months among media circle that closed-door talks between Iran and the Unites States have taken place since November 2001.

In a bid to gag the controversial debate, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei lashed out at those who have tried to promote the idea of talks with the United States, saying such an act is tantamount to "treason."

The United States and Iran have severed relations since 1980 after Iranian students stormed the American Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and took its staff hostage for 444 days.

Earlier this year, US President George W. Bush accused Iran of being part of the "axis of evil" attempting to develop weapons of mass destruction.
