Scientists of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Bombay have designed and developed the country's biggest walking robot "Nataraj", according to the Press Trust of India Monday.

The over 1.8-meter-tall robot, weighing about 250 kg, has six legs that would enable it to walk, turn, climb stairs and step over obstacles, said Dr. C.Amarnath Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the IIT.

"Nataraj" would be able to move in rough terrain and disaster-ravaged areas. It can carry tools, cameras and manipulator hands for inspection, repair and maintenance. The six legs are mounted on the sides of a hexagonal chassis and the robot appears like a giant spider, said Amarnath.

The robot, which took eight years to be completed, can walk 100meters on the level ground in about 15 minutes and can step over obstacles 45 cm high. It can be remote controlled through the Internet.
