France Tuesday welcomed the United Nations resolution demanding an immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from the occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank and an end of all acts of violence in the region.

"France welcomes this balanced resolution to which the whole ofthe European Union member nations have brought their support," said Bernard Valero, deputy spokesman of the French Foreign Ministry.

The UN General Assembly resolution, passed Monday by a vote of 114-4 with 11 abstentions, urged an "immediate cessation to military incursions and all acts of violence, terror, provocation, incitement and destruction in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories."

"We noticed the General Assembly has pointed out that the violence will not resolve anything. This is the message that France, together with its European partners, repeats since months ago," said the French spokesman.

"Only a resumption of dialogue and the opening of political perspectives will allow the durable appeasement of the situation and the resumption of peace negotiations," he said.

The resolution also called for emergency assistance to help alleviate the current humanitarian situation in Palestine and revitalize its economy.

Palestinian civilians should be given access to medical and humanitarian organizations at all times, the resolution said.

The assembly's action came after a day-long debate on last week's UN report on Israel's recent military offensive across the WestBank and the fierce fighting in the Jenin refugee camp, where the Palestinians say some 500 people were massacred.
