South Africa's former president F. W. de Klerk testified in court during the trial of his ex-wife's alleged murderer Tuesday, according to a court in Cape Town.

De Klerk said in the court that after he divorced Marike de Klerk, he took his personal belongings and left.

He identified an expensive watch he had bought for his wife in Switzerland as well as other items allegedly found in Luyanda Mboniswa's possession, the man accused to have raped and killed Marike de Klerk on Dec. 2, 2001.

Marike de Klerk, 64, was found stabbed to death on her apartment where she had lived alone since her divorce in 1998.

Mboniswa was a black security guard who was arrested in a nearby township after the murder several hours later, allegedly with victim's mobile telephone and other items from her apartment.

De Klerk was South African president from 1989 to 1994, he handed the power to Nelson Mandela after the first all-race election in 1994.

After the murder of his ex-wife, De Klerk urged the government to take concrete measures to crack down the rising crime rate in the country.
