Italy is an increasingly likely targetfor an international terrorist attack, according to a secret services report released Tuesday.

The 49th six-monthly report, which was read in parliament Tuesday, claimed that "Italian initiatives interpreted as 'persecutory'" have increased the risks of an attack.

According to the secret services, Islamic fundamentalist cells hiding in Italy have stepped up contact with their counterparts inAfghanistan and other European nations.

The report also mentioned a series of "sleeping networks", and stressed "the danger linked to illegal circles which offer supportto operational cells from abroad".

In response, the intelligence service said, it was focusing attention on cutting the sources and channels of financing for international terrorism, particularly in connection "with arms andnarcotics trafficking and other illegal sectors, such as false papers linked to illegal migration".

Furthermore, the service revealed it had updated its Internet surveillance, partly because terrorist cells are using informationtechnology to communicate, and partly because of the threat of so-called cyberterrorism, which it described as "initiatives aimed atdestroying critical computerized systems".
