810 People Die in Emergency Situations in Russia

In the first half of 2002, 547 emergency situations were registered in Russia. As a result of these emergency situations, 810 people died and 335,050 were injured, Interfax reported Tuesday.

In the first half of 2002, 547 emergency situations were registered in Russia. As a result of these emergency situations, 810 people died and 335,050 were injured, Interfax reported Tuesday.

The number of emergency situations in the first half of this year is up 25% from last year. The number of technological accidents and catastrophes increased by 28% and the number of natural disasters increased by 30%, the press service for the Emergency Situations Ministry told Interfax on Tuesday.

Industrial accidents and catastrophes injured 2,097 and killed 533 people in 2002.

Sixty-nine people were killed and 229 were injured as a result of major terrorist acts committed in the Southern Federal District in the first half of 2002, the press service said.
