Colombia New President Seeks New Peace Dialogue

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe who was just sworn in announced his intention Wednesday to begin a new peace dialogue to reach agreement that would allow the release of hostages and the end of the internal armed conflict.

He said talks have already begun with the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The new Colombian leader called on every Colombian to recover solidarity and confidence lost due to the armed conflict and political corruption.

Uribe made this call during the speech he delivered during his inauguration in Congress.

"The entire nation demands justice and security," he emphasized.He also made reference to threats pronounced by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) against local leaders, by assuring"the defense of mayors will be the protection of democracy."
