Power Project in NW China Province Draws Overseas Funds

Construction has begun on the Zhiganglaka hydroelectric power station on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the first power project solely-funded by overseas investment in Qinghai Province, northwest China.

Construction has begun on the Zhiganglaka hydroelectric power station on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the first power project solely-funded by overseas investment in Qinghai Province, northwest China.

The power project is jointly funded by AES Corporation of the United States and a Hong Kong company.

Located at the juncture of Jianzha and Hualong counties, Zhiganglaka hydropower station is one of the 13 power stations planned for the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the second longest river in China.

With a designed installed capacity of 190,000 kw, the hydropower station is expected to generate 762 million kw hours ofelectricity annually upon completion.

The construction, which began on August 2, is expected to be completed before October 2005. The first power generating unit is expected to go into operation in February 2005.
