Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said on Saturday that Russia, Kazakhstan and other countries on the Caspian coast might set up a joint defense contingent in the area.

"I do not rule out the establishment of a military group, whichwould include Russia, Kazakhstan and other Caspian countries," Ivanov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

"We are aware of the threats in the region. The situation dictates a need for cooperation among our neighbors on the Caspian," he said.

Ivanov is currently in the Caspian Sea city of Kaspiisk in Russia's Dagestan region to observe large-scale naval exercises onthe Caspian Sea, which are to last through August 15.

Of the five Caspian states, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are participating along with Russia in the war games, Russia's biggestpost-Soviet military exercises in the region. Iran has sent observers while Turkmenistan has boycotted the event.

The issue of how to divide the oil and gas riches of the Caspian Sea remains unresolved.
