President Ferdinand Marcos may be finally buried more than 12 years after his death in exile in Hawaii.
That is if former First Lady Imelda Marcos, who is reportedly looking for a suitable burial place for her husband, does not change her mind, the Philippine Star reported on Saturday.
Marcos' remains are kept in a refrigerated crypt at the family mausoleum in Batac, Ilocos Norte.
Marcos, his family and close friends fled the country to a Hawaiian exile on Feb. 26, 1986, following the People Power popular revolt that installed then-opposition presidential candidate Corazon Aquino to power.
Marcos died on Sep. 28, 1989, in Hawaii. But his remains were allowed back into the country until the early years of the administration of President Fidel Ramos, a distant Marcos relative.
Marcos's burial may coincide with his birthday commemoration onSep. 11 as suggested by several of the Marcos family supporters. Marcos, who defeated Diosdado Macapagal, father of current President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, in the 1965 presidential elections, was born in 1917.
During a visit to the northern city of Laoag, Marcos had told reporters she was looking for an appropriate burial site for her husband.
Mrs. Marcos is reportedly interested in a site in Laoag City. The site is said to be located on a high ground and overlooks the China Sea, factors reportedly strongly being considered by Mrs. Marcos because of her belief in feng shui.
Suggestions by former President Joseph Estrada that Marcos be buried at a cemetery for heroes in Metro Manila met fierce opposition.
The Philippine governments, under several presidents, have probed Marcos' corruption cases for the past 15 year, but it is believed to have only recovered 2 billion US dollars of the Marcosfortune estimated to be worth 5 billion to 10 billion dollars.
