Murderer of Beijing Opera Star Sentenced to Death

The murderer of famous Beijing opera singer Wang Yinqiu has been sentenced to death by the No. 1 Intermediate People's Court of Beijing, with his political rights deprived for life and his possessions confiscated.

The murderer of famous Beijing opera singer Wang Yinqiu has been sentenced to death by the No. 1 Intermediate People's Court of Beijing, with his political rights deprived for life and his possessions confiscated.

Wang Yinqiu was killed on Oct. 20, 2001 by Zhan Qinghua, a migrant worker from Juye County in east China's Shandong Province,who broke into Wang's house from a balcony and attacked the 75-year-old singer with a kitchen knife.

Sources with the court said the 32-year-old criminal then stoleproperty worth 4,600 yuan (554 US dollars), including about 1,000 yuan (120 US dollars) in cash, portable VCD and CD players, a goldring, a shaver and operatic headgear.

Wang, born in Suzhou in east China's Jiangsu Province, was a renowned artist in the Beijing Opera Theater, and student of ChengYanqiu, founder of the Cheng style of Beijing Opera singing.
