A monument to Northern Fleet sailors who tragically died aboard the nuclear submarine Kursk was unveiled in the submarine's home base of Vidyaevo on Monday.

The monument consists of the submarine conning tower and marbleplates with the names of the crew engraved on them.

The Kursk sank after its torpedo exploded aboard on August 12, 2000, in the Barents Sea during military exercises, killing all 118 crew members.

The widow of Kursk captain, Irina Lyachina, said she wanted thatpeople coming to the monument to have a feeling of pride along with sorrow. "Let ships keep sailing from these piers into the sea,and always come back," she said.

Similar campaigns were held in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kursk city, and other regions of the country.

A monument, presenting a bronze sailor with cap in hand, loomed over a nuclear submarine with its nose buried in ocean sands, was opened at Moscow's central museum of armed forces.

In St. Petersburg, the Russia's second largest city, commemoration meetings were held at Serafiemovskoye cemetery, where 32 crew members and the Kursk's captain Gennady lyachin are buried.
