Chinese Professor Emphasizes Cooperation in Anti-terrorism

A Chinese professor on human rights protection Tuesday called on the international community to strengthen cooperation to fight against terrorism effectively.

A Chinese professor on human rights protection Tuesday called on the international community to strengthen cooperation to fight against terrorism effectively.

At the ongoing UN 54th Session of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, Professor Chen Shiqiu stressed that the cooperation should be based on equality and mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It is necessary for every nation to enhance international cooperation as terrorist organizations worldwide have strengthenedtheir collusion and their terrorist activities and imposed threat upon the international community, said Chen.

He said that the United Nations and its Security Council shouldplay the leading role concerning coordinative mechanism of justice,neutrality, ration and efficiency in the combat against terrorism.

Chen emphasized that the international community should avoid double standard in the fight against terrorism.

Every nation ought to treat and deal with all the terrorist activities either domestic or abroad in accordance with the same standard, he added.

The Chinese professor also pointed out that anti-terrorism activities should not necessarily be connected with specific ethnic groups or religions.

The Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, the Commission on Human Rights' principal subsidiary organ,is holding its 54th session at the Palais des Nations in Geneva from 29 July to 16 August 2002.

Created by the Commission on Human Rights in 1947, the Sub-Commission is made up of 26 Experts from five regional groups.
