The Sudanese government will be committed to a peace deal with the southern rebel group, the Sudanese ambassador to Cairo said Wednesday in Cairo.

Speaking to reporters after his meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher, Ahmed Abdel Halim said, they had discussed ways to boost bilateral cooperation in terms of reaching a peacefulsettlement in Sudan.

"Maher's meeting with US envoy to Sudan John Danforth, which is due in Cairo on Thursday, was also tackled," Halim added.

Danforth already arrived in Cairo Wednesday for talks with Egyptian officials on peace in Sudan, according to US sources.

"Danforth will meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher to discuss how the United States and Egypt can best encourage parties in Sudan to end a civil war and rebuild Sudan for all the Sudanese," the US Embassy to Cairo said on Tuesday.

On July 20, the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudanese People's Liberation Army, under the US mediation, signed an agreement on the separation of state and religion and the right of self-determination of southern Sudan, which are two key issues for ending the 19-year-old civil war in Sudan.

The agreement touches upon a six-year transitional period, a six-month preparatory period ahead of it, as well as the southerners' right of self-determination through a referendum to beheld in the south.

The Sudanese Islamic government has been fighting with the southern rebel, which has been struggling for greater autonomy for the predominantly Christian and animist south since 1983.
