The Iranian government Wednesday said American statesmen are wise enough not to think about attacking Iran, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.

Government spokesman Abdullah Ramezanzadeh was quoted as saying Iran is ready to defend its territory, while stressing Iran is "notafter war and will not take part in any coalition for war."

The spokesman said Iran invites all to a coalition for peace butwill not sit still when anybody tries to "invade even an inch of the Iranian soil."

"We act in such a manner that our national interests would be guaranteed and make those trying to invade our country regret as wedid in the past," he said.

On Iran's delivery of 16 Al-Qaeda fighters to Saudi Arabia, Ramezanzadeh said Iran had already announced the arrests of foreignnationals trying to cross into Iran through the border with Afghanistan.

He said the 16 foreign nationals are from Europe, Arab states and Africa.

The spokesman warned that "any foreign national illegally crossing into Iranian territory from Afghanistan would be arrested and definitely delivered to the country of their origin."

On Sunday, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal told the Washington Post that Iran had shown significant cooperation in rounding up and handing over 16 Al-Qaeda suspects to Saudi Arabia and they were being interrogated.

US President George W. Bush has branded Iran as part of an "axisof evil," along with Iraq and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and accused them of developing weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorism.
