The Zimbabwean police has arrested a senior official of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change(MDC) for his allegedly plotting to unseat the government through unconstitutional means, the Herald reported Thursday.

MDC National Youth Chairman Nelson Chamisa handed himself over to the police in Harare Wednesday after receiving information thathe was being investigated on suspicion of breaching the Public Order and Security Act.

Police Spokesman Inspector Andrew Phiri said that Chamisa allegedly attended or addressed three meetings in Harare at which the gatherings plotted to unseat the government.

"We were keen to question Chamisa on allegations that he recently held private meetings at which subversive material was discussed," said Phiri.

If found guilty under the charges being preferred against him, Chamisa faces up to 20 years in prison.

The opposition youth leader has another case pending at the courts.

On the first offense, he was charged with inciting public violence during the run-up to the presidential election.

He was initially charged with breaching the Law and Order Act.

Since the formation of the opposition party about two years ago, several of its leaders including party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, have been arrested and charged with public violence or calling for the violent ouster of President Robert Mugabe.

Tsvangirai is currently facing trial at the courts for allegedly plotting to assassinate Mugabe.
