US Presidential Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad claimed Wednesday in Kabul that Iran is still supporting terrorist groups.

At a press briefing in US embassy held Wednesday, the envoy said that Iran's conflicting words on terrorism is a good proof of supporting the terrorist groups, adding that the US had never spoken against Iran without any proof.

He was apparently referring to Iranian President Mohammad Khatami's criticism on US policies during his one-day to Kabul on Tuesday.

Khalilzad noted that two months ago, Iranian officials were claiming that there were no al-Qaeda members in Iran, but the Iranian president admitted during his stay here that Iran had transferred a number of al-Qaeda activists to Saudi Arabia.

Khatami, the first Iranian leader to visit Afghanistan in 50 years, criticized the United States for its "aggressive policies". He denied the charges by US officials that his country had been supporting terrorism, saying that Tehran's struggle against terrorism goes back even further than the United States.

The US special envoy also urged the international community to move quickly to deliver their aid promises to the war-shattered country.

"The United States is trying to find ways to encourage the world community to support Afghanistan," he said.

On the Afghan national army, he expressed his disappointment that no important improvements had been achieved so far.

"This happens when a lot of factions and irresponsible armed men are present in Afghanistan," he said.
