The army of the United States and the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) will launch the MEDFLAG 2002 exercise, the biggest US military training event in Uganda in several years, next Monday, reported the New Vision newspaper on Thursday.

US Embassy Public Affairs Officer Mary Jeffers said that the exercise will be launched on Monday at the Soroti Hospital and at seven field locations in Soroti district, some 150 km northeastern of capital Kampala.

The military exercise will end on Aug. 31.

Medical and logistics specialists from the US Air Force, Army and Navy and a number of Ugandan military medical units will participate in MEDFLAG 2002, along with the soldiers from Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa, Britain, Morocco, France and the Netherlands, Jeffers said.

The August exercise is the latest in a series of MEDFLAG exercises, which are held in African countries each year.

The MEDFLAG deployments help US medical units gain experience in providing contingency medical support. The most recent MEDFLAG exercise was conducted last summer in Nampula and Maputo, Mozambique.
