Li Peng Meets Ghanaian counterpart

Chinese top lawmaker Li Peng said in Beijing Friday that China greatly valued developing friendly and cooperative relations with Ghana, one of the first countries to establish diplomatic ties with China.

Chinese top lawmaker Li Peng said here Friday that China greatly valued developing friendly and cooperative relations with Ghana, one of the first countries to establish diplomatic ties with China.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People'sCongress, made the remark when meeting with Peter Ala Adjetey, speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament.

Li expressed appreciation over Ghana's persistence on the "one China" principle and its support for China in the international arena.

The top lawmaker also stressed that China supported the effortsof African countries to maintain and promote unity among themselves and their equal rights to participate in world affairs.

China was willing to engage in various forms of economic cooperation and trade with African nations on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, Li said.

Adjetey said developing friendly relations with China had long been pursued by Ghanaian governments, and no matter which political party was in power, this stance would never change.

He said that the spirit of cooperation and friendship between Ghana and China had been shown in the international arena, as the two shared similar views on many international issues and kept close contact in various international organizations.

Both leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two legislative bodies for the further development of bilateral ties.
