Overall deaths caused by a massive mud-rock flow at Xinping County and a landslide at Yanjin County in southwest China's Yunnan Province have surged to 31 and 21 respectively by Friday.

The mud-rock flow occurred at about 4:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Yi-Dai Autonomous County of Xinping, while the landslide hit a small village in Yanjin at 7:50 p.m. Monday.

By 10:30 p.m. Friday, there were still 33 people reported missing in the mud-rock flow, and 8 in the landslide.

The provincial government has allocated a total of 8.7 million yuan (1.05 million US dollars) of relief fund to the disaster-stricken areas.

Since entering the flood season, mountain hazards, such as mud-rock flows and landslides, have taken place frequently in Yunnan due to excessive rainfalls.

Rescue work was still underway at press time in Xinping and Yanjin.
