Chinese Xiao Beats Romanian King on Pommel Horse

Chinese gymnast Xiao Qin outplayed Romanian Olympic and world champion Marious Urzica on the men's pommel horse at the Li Ning Cup International Gymnastics Master Challenge Saturday in Beijing.

Chinese gymnast Xiao Qin outplayed Romanian Olympic and world champion Marious Urzica on the men's pommel horse at the Li Ning Cup International Gymnastics Master Challenge Saturday in Beijing.

Xiao, who lost to Urzica in last year's world championships, performed a stable routine on the pommel horse and collected 9.863points, beating the Romanian King of the event into second with 9.813.

The 17-year-old said that the victory over Urzica did not mean anything because his goal is to win the champion at the worlds and Olympic Games.

Xiao said:"This is not a big international event. I would like to win gold medals at more important competition, like the Athens Olympic Games."

Romanian world champions Andrea Raducan competed in the women's vault but finished a distant fourth place with 9.044. Chinese rookie Wang Tiantian snatched the gold with 9.35.

Van De Leur Verona of the Netherlands claimed victory on the women's uneven bars with a 9.575, beating Chinese Li Ya and Dutch teammate Endel Renske at 9.500.

Chinese Sydney Olympic Games men's winning team member Yang Weiwon the floor exercise with 9.75, ahead of Romanian Marian Dragulescu 9.650 while Xie Jianhui beat another Chinese Olympian Huang Xu for the title on the rings.

Li Ning Cup, named in honor of world and Olympic gold medalist Li Ning, is a two-day event final competition, with eight gymnasts competing in each of the six men's apparatus and four women's events.
