Agricultural departments in northeast China are trying to find new outlets for regional corn exports because of fewer sales to south China and a larger import quota under the country's WTO commitment.

Statistics show that due to insufficient production, half of south China's corn needs have had to be met by buying from northeast China or importing from other countries. The market share for the latter has increased because of foreign corn's lowerprice and high quality.

Yang Qingcai, vice-governor of northeastern Jilin Province, maintains that the situation could change if local corn exports toneighboring Asian countries increased.

When attending an on-going international agriculture and food exposition, the official told Xinhua that corn grown in this majorproduction base had the advantage of being non-genetically modified .

The Northeast China Plain, where Jilin Province is situated, isclose to major importing Asian nations, including Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said Yang, adding that exports from the plain had a real advantage of reduced transport costs compared with America and Argentina.

As a result, Jilin Province has further restructured corn production to cut costs and improve quality.

Several countries like Japan and ROK have shown interest in setting up long-term contracts for buying corn from this province.
