The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) will continue its efforts to cooperate with the Chinese government, said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson in Beijing Monday.

The visiting UN human rights official told the opening of the "Workshop on Judges and Lawyers" that the workshop was the direct result of over two years of cooperation between the OHCHR and the Chinese government.

Robinson said the workshop would open a new area of human rights cooperation between the two sides.

During her two-day stay here, she will also evaluate the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on human rights cooperation between the two sides signed in November 2000.

According to the MOU, China and the UN agency were to carry out cooperative projects in 2001-2002 in the areas of judicial administration, human rights education, legal system building, the right of development and economic, social and cultural rights.

Robinson said the Chinese government had made great efforts in the promotion of human rights in recent years, and the OHCHR would continue its support in this important endeavor.

It was Robinson's seventh visit to China since she became the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Chinese vice-premier meets UN human rights official
Human development remains a key challenge for the international community and deserves collaborative efforts worldwide for further improvements, Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen said Monday.

Qian made the remarks during his meeting with Mary Robinson, the visiting United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Peace and development was still the main theme for this era. The international community should take practical steps to achievebalanced and sustainable development because it would continue to be one of the most crucial challenges for human society, Qian said.

Although terrorism deserved severe repression because it threatened international security while seriously violating human rights, anti-terrorism measures were not a solution to all problems, he said.

Qian praised Robinson's efforts as the UN High Commissioner in advancing dialogue and exchanges on human rights in international circles.

He said China had worked effectively in a range of ways with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in recent years.

Robinson, who has been to China seven times as the UN human rights chief, expressed her appreciation for the Chinese government's active work in boosting international debate and cooperation in the field of human rights.

She said she had witnessed great changes in China in economic development and the building of a democratic society.
