Suspicions of false resident registration have been aired involving Prime Minister-designate Chang Dae-whan.

According to Mr. Chang's residence registration, his wife, son and daughter were living in an apartment in Apgujeong-dong, one of the wealthiest areas in Seoul, until the two children were admitted to an elementary school in the area. The apartment was owned by an executive of Maeil Business Newspaper in the late 1980s, which Mr. Chang headed before his nomination to be prime minister.

Once the children were admitted to a school in the area, where the quality of education befits the cost of the apartments, the family's address was changed to that of Mr. Chang's home in Seongbuk district, central Seoul.

The prime minister's office said Mr. Chang will clarify the issue to the National Assembly.

Also, the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, a civic group, said it has forwarded a lengthy questionnaire to the National Assembly concerning Mr. Chang's background. The subjects include real estate transactions and possible preferential treatment in obtaining a loan.

The group wants Mr. Chang to get no easier treatment by the Assembly than did the first nominee, female educator Chang Sang.
