Officials of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) declined on Monday to comment on reports that Nidal Sabri Al Banna, better known as Abu Nidal, was found dead in his apartment in Baghdad, Iraq.

It was reported that Abu Nidal, leader of a Palestinian militantgroup called the Fatah-Revolutionary Council, had committed a suicide and shot himself in his apartment in Baghdad three days ago.

Abu Nidal was killed in mysterious conditions in his apartment, the West Bank city Ramallah-based Palestinian daily Al Ayyam quotedwell-informed sources in Iraq as saying.

The report said Abu Nidal, 65, has been wanted by several countries, especially the United States and Israel.

Abu Nidal is said to have lived at various times in Iraq, Syria,Algeria, Libya and Sudan. He broke off from the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1974, claiming that the PLO was too moderate. He has been accused of responsible for some 90 terrorist attacks and the deaths of hundreds of people, including senior officials of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Abu Nidal's group broke off from Arafat's mainstream Fatah movement years before and had even plotted attempts on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's life.

It is suspected of having carried out terrorist attacks in about20 countries, including the United States, Britain, France, Israel and various Arab countries.

Four years ago, there had been reports of Abu Nidal's deteriorating health in Arab and international media, which claimedthat he had been hospitalized in Cairo under prison conditions.

A decade earlier, reports were published and confirmed by intelligence agencies that he underwent treatment in an east Germanhospital after being diagnosed with leukemia.
