Jerusalem to Build Memorial for Sept. 11 Victims

With the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in New York's World Trade Center less than a month away, the city of Jerusalem has decided to build a memorial for the victims at the entrance to the city, Jerusalem Post reported on Monday.

A cornerstone-laying ceremony for the memorial is to take place in about a month, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani are among the dignitaries expected to fly in for the event, the report said.

"This project is meant to symbolize the solidarity of Jerusalem with the horrific attack New Yorkers suffered," city spokesman Hagai Elias was cited as saying.

According to the report, the planned memorial will be constructed in bronze and will be six meters high. The names of the nearly 3,000 victims of the World Trade Center attack will be inscribed on the memorial, which will be surrounded by benches.

The report said the Jewish National Fund received a 500,000 US dollars donation for the construction of the memorial, with assurances given that additional funds for the project would be forthcoming if needed.
