The 1,760-km Tanzanian-Zambia Railway will be privatized within two years after the privatization process started, local newspaper Daily News reported Tuesday.
The just ended 51st Council of Minister meeting of the Tanzanian-Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara) disclosed that the meeting proposed for appointing a joint task force to accelerate the divestiture of the 26-year-old line, the report said.
Tanzanian Minister for Communication and Transport Mark Mwandosya was quoted as saying that two groups, Parastatal Sector Reform Commission from the Tanzanian side and Zambia Privatization Agency, were agreed to be established after the meeting. The two groups will discuss and offer a timetable for the privatization process.
Mwandosya also said that the meeting revised Tazara's five-year business plan as an interim measure for sustainability of the railway line.
Tazara rail line, which runs from Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania, to Kapiri Mposhi, about 350 km north of Lusaka, became operational in 1976.
