China's Leaders Farewell Former State Councilor

The body of Chen Junsheng, a former state councilor and vice-chairman of the National Committeeof the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was cremated in Beijing on Tuesday.

The body of Chen Junsheng, a former state councilor and vice-chairman of the National Committeeof the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was cremated in Beijing on Tuesday.

Chen died of illness in the capital on August 8. He was 75.

Chen was regarded as an outstanding leader in China's agricultural sector for his great contribution to rural reform anddevelopment.

Before the cremation on Tuesday morning, Li Ruihuan and Hu Jintao, two members of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, and othersenior officials farewelled the body of the "excellent Party member and veteran loyal communist fighter," whom was covered witha CPC flag.

Members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing, and other senior officials visited Chen in hospital before his death or paid their respects to his relatives after he died.

Chen, a native of Heilongjiang Province in northeast China, wasborn into a poor peasant family in April 1927. He joined the CPC in April 1947.
