Construction of an international zone for industries based on new materials started on Monday in Guiyang, in southwest China's Guizhou Province.

The Guiyang zone is one of the industrialized national bases for new materials set up by China's Ministry of Science and Technology (MST).

Research on new materials technology is one of six key high-tech fields in the country's high and new technology research and development program.

New materials refers to those with outstanding and specialized functions, including high-temperature alloys, artificial crystals and fine pottery and porcelains. New materials technology has been used in many fields during China's economic and military development, and in everyday life.

Intended to cover an area of 128 hectares, the Guiyang zone aims to nurture a group of new materials businesses to a certain size and to be market competitive. The zone is expected to generate 800 million yuan from production by the end of 2005.

China has set up five national industrialized bases for new materials, three in the East and two in the West, says Li Jian, director of MST's high-tech development and industrialization department.

Li said west China was rich in minerals, with 51 percent of the country's total resources. Setting up the zone would promote the development of the new materials industry in Guizhou and west China.
