Vice President Hu Holds Talks with President of Zanzibar

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao held talks in Beijing on Wednesday with Amani Abeid Karume, president of Zanzibar of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao held talks in Beijing on Wednesday with Amani Abeid Karume, president of Zanzibar of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Hu said China and Tanzania had a deep friendship, which had made healthy and steady progress despite changes in the international situation since the two countries established diplomatic relations 38 years ago.

Marked achievements had been made in politics, culture, trade and economic cooperation between China and Tanzania, and the two countries had always supported and worked together in the international arena, said the vice-president.

He said China treasured its traditional friendship with Tanzania, and would continue to work with Tanzania to boost bilateral ties to a higher level.

On bilateral trade and economic cooperation, Hu said there was great potential there and the two sides had achieved a lot in expanding new cooperative methods and fields.

China valued its trade and economic cooperation with Tanzania and encouraged Chinese businesses to set up business in Tanzania, Hu said.

He also appreciated Tanzania's efforts to safeguard the unity of Africa and promote regional economic cooperation, adding that Tanzania has played an important role in safeguarding peace and development in Africa.

Karume extended thanks for China's generous help to Tanzania, saying that Tanzania is willing to work with China to boost bilateral ties.

He also appreciated China's successful implementation of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong, stressing that Tanzania will abide by the "one-China" policy.

He hoped that more Chinese businesses would invest in Tanzaniaand participate in the country's economic construction.

After the talks, Hu and Karume attended the signing ceremony ofan agreement on economic and technology cooperation between China and Zanzibar.

Before the talks, Hu hosted a grand welcoming ceremony in honorof Karume.
