A light plane carrying 18 people, 13 of them tourists, crashed in western Nepal enroute to a popular tourist destination on Thursday, a civil aviation official said.

The plane, belonging to a private airliner Shangrila Air, went missing 20 minutes before it was due to land at Pokhara airport, 225 km west of Kathmandu.

Rescue helicopters have been sent to the suspected crash site, he said.

There were 15 passengers and three crew members on board the Canadian-built Twin Otter belonging to the private domestic carrier, Shangrila Airlines.

The flight was coming from Jomson, a popular trekking route and Hindu religious site.

The Himalayan kingdom has been hard hit this annual monsoon season, with torrential rains and landslides killing nearly 500 people in remote mountainous areas.
