BASF, one of the world's top chemical goods manufacturers, announced Thursday in Beijing that it will sell more environment-friendly products in China, in accordance with the Chinese government's efforts to curb environmental pollution.

"BASF has always given top priority to safety, health and environmental protection, rather than to our financial interests,"said BASF official Dieter Kovar during a news conference.

The company now plans to promote its environment-friendly products including "Keropur," an environment-friendly additive forgasoline, "Glysantin," a coolant product, and "Hydraulan," its brake fluids product.

BASF's products could help not only to extend the life of cars and reduce the cost of driving, but could also make a substantial contribution to China's environmental protection efforts, the BASFofficial said.

In recent years, the Chinese government has exerted a great deal of effort to address its environmental problems and encourage consumers to buy environment-friendly goods.

Official statistics show that car exhaust fumes account for a large share of urban air pollution. By January 2003, the government will adopt tougher standards on car exhaust fumes in cities.

BASF was founded in 1865, and its salespeople entered China as early as 1885. BASF comprises the parent company -- BASF Aktiengesellschaft of Ludwigshafen, Germany, and 149 consolidated subsidiaries.

In 1996, BASF set up a holding company in Beijing -- BASF (China) Ltd.. Thus far, it has invested some 600 million US dollarsin China. Currently, BASF has eight production facilities and six offices in the country.
