About 1,200 air passengers scheduled to fly out of Tibet Friday will be stranded at Gongga Airport near Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, until Saturday.

Ten flights are planned by the airport to fly out over 2,600 passengers Friday. The airport hopes to arrange at least 10 flights a day with the aim of clearing all the stranded passengers by Sunday.

Flights in and out of Tibet were suspended on Tuesday morning, when an aircraft from China Southwest Airlines found cloud conditions unsuitable for landing.

The airport authorities ordered planes to return or fly to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, which is the next nearest airport.
