US Ambassador to Lebanon Vincent Battle has affirmed that Islam is different from the terrorism, the newspaper As Safir reported Friday in Beirut.

Battle made the remarks when he paid an unexpected visit to Lebanon's Grand Mufti Sheikh Rashid Qabbani, who complained to Battle about the "anti-Islamic" campaign waged by some U.S. newspapers against Saudi Arabia and other Arab states.

The US government has never linked the Islam with terrorism, Battle noted, stressing that the US campaign against terrorism needs help from Islamic countries.

The ambassador, meanwhile, expressed that Washington is determined to achieve a solution to the Mideast conflict on the basis of the land-for-peace formula adopted by the 1991 Madrid conference and the Arab peace plan adopted at the 2002 Arab summit.

He praised the Arab peace initiative adopted by the Arab League during its summit in Beirut in March this year as a feasible road to the peace, saying that it reflects Arab aspiration for the peace.

The initiative calls for a comprehensive peace between the Arab world and Israel provided the Jewish state withdrew to its pre-1967borders.
