Jia Qinglin, secretary of the municipal committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), has urged overseas Chinese students and academics to contribute to developing the national capital, Beijing, into an international metropolis.

"Beijing is a city that respects knowledge and talented people," said the official, who is also a member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, at a meeting with a group of overseas Chinese academics on Friday.

Beijing is to host the 2008 Olympic Games.

According to Jia, the city government plans to hold the best-ever Olympic Games, and by 2008, the city's annual per-capita income is expected to top 6,000 US dollars.

Meanwhile, the capital was working on a number of development goals including the upgrading of its manufacturing industry, Jia said.

He urged returned students and academics to help achieve those goals.
