Xiao Yang, president of China's Supreme People's Court, met in Beijing on Friday with Marco Aurelio Farias Mello, president of the Federal Supreme Tribunal of Brazil.

During the meeting, Xiao briefed Marco Mello and his delegationon China's social and economic development as well as the improvement of China's legal system, noting that the principle of "running state affairs according to law" has been honored.

After establishing a socialist market economy and joining the World Trade Organization (WTO), China had enacted and revised a series of laws to adapt to the market economy and conform to WTO rules, he said.

He said "justice and efficiency" was the guiding principle of China's courts and the country was striving to train more high-quality judges to achieve that end.

The courts of the two countries should make more frequent exchanges and cooperation, he suggested.

Marco Mello said China had made marked progress in promoting its legal system, from which Brazil could learn a lot. He hoped tostrengthen cooperation with Chinese judicial circles.
