Slovak President Rudolf Schuster was rushed to hospital with a high fever late Saturday and his illness might be caused by intended poisoning, reports reaching here said.

Jan Fule, spokesman for the president, said the family of the president believed someone might have tried to poison him.

"All possible examinations have been conducted, and none of them has identified any internal cause of the infection," said Fule.

Fule said the president's family had planned to ask for a criminal investigation to find out if someone had poisoned the president.

Schuster, 68, plagued by health problems over the last two years, was hospitalized just hours after being discharged.
