China said on Saturday that capacity building is key to the sustainable development of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
"Talents and human capacity building have never been so pressing than today," said Jiang Qiangui, head of the Chinese delegation to a ministerial meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Acapulco,
Mexico
.
To meet the challenges of the New Economy and technological revolution, SMEs should work on structural reform, technical innovation and new products, said Jiang, who is deputy director of the Economic and Trade Committee of China's State Council, or cabinet.
APEC economies should adopt right policies to support SME capacity building, Jiang told the two-day gathering in this Pacific town.
He also asked APEC's developed economies to narrow the "digital divide" with developing economies. The "digital divide" has put developing economies in disadvantage in competition, Jiang said.
He urged developed members to help developing ones construct their own information infrastructure, provide technical training and share know-how.
The annual meeting is focused on the improvement of government policies on SMEs, their sustainable development and regional cooperation.
