Asian Optimist Sailing Championship opens in Qingdao, China

The 2002 Asian Optimist Sailing Championships opened in eastern China's scenic port city of Qingdao on Saturday afternoon, with the ideal wind speed of four meters per second.

The 2002 Asian Optimist Sailing Championships opened in eastern China's scenic port city of Qingdao on Saturday afternoon, with the ideal wind speed of four meters per second.

A total of 57 athletes of 11 teams from ten countries and regions, including China, Japan, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, are registered for the top-level sailing competition at the optimist class in Asia.

Zhang Faqiang, the deputy director the State Sports General Administration, said at the opening ceremony that the Asian Optimist Sailing Championship was another major competition following last year's 39th World Optimist Sailing Championship, which would boost not only the contacts of the participants but also their sailing skills.

The championship will also test Qingdao's capability of hosting large-scale and high-level international sailing competitions, he added.

Qingdao, a port city featured by its value at foreign trade, marine scientific research and tourism, is the cradle of the sportof sailing in China and will hold the sailing competitions at Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
