A 10-day U.N. conference on sustainable development will open Monday in Johannesburg, South Africa, with representatives from around 190 countries and regions taking part.

Participants at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held 10 years after the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, will cover wide-ranging issues including globalization, poverty eradication, finance and trade, water, health, sanitation and climate change.

They are hoping to draft a high-level political declaration and an action program to achieve sustainable development, before the event culminates in the Sept. 2-4 meeting of more than 100 top government leaders.

While the summit is being held, governments from around the world as well as nongovernmental organizations are also concurrently staging various events to raise awareness on global warming, desertification and other environmental issues at a venue in a Johannesburg suburb.
