For the first time, 27 Japanese-funded companies held a joint fair in Shanghai on Sunday to attract Chinese employees.

Traditionally Japanese firms prefer choosing their staff individually or via agencies rather than taking part in public job fairs along with their business rivals.

The change from the personnel invitation system, which has proved ineffective in China, is a result of fierce competition among world companies who have been head-hunting skilled staff in China in recent years, experts say.

They also pointed out that the fair, which offered over 200 jobvacancies, could be seen as an indication of business expansion byJapanese companies, which had contributed over seven billion US dollars in contractual capital in Shanghai by the end of June thisyear, according to official statistics.

Satoshi Yoshida, general manager with the IT Center under Matsushita Electric (China) Co., Ltd., revealed at the fair his company, which has set up nearly 50 sole-invested or joint ventures across China over the past 23 years, planned more business interests in the country in the future.

The Shanghai office of Shimadzu Corporation offered 12 positions to local people at the fair, and another nine offices based on the Chinese mainland also needed more capable staff, a company manager revealed on Sunday.

However, two Shanghai graduates said it was not very easy to get jobs with Japanese firms, which demand excellent skills from their candidates but offer not so attractive payments.

Domestic observers believe that since China has gradually opened up the employment agency market, Japanese companies will find it less difficult to attract suitable staff.
