Highly Concerning China, US Plans to Deploy New Fighters in Guam

PRINT DISCUSSION CHINESE SEND TO FRIEND

Due to rising concern by the US over "Chinese mainland's military force and development", commander of Pacific Air Forces Bagert asked military officials to deploy a batch of fighters, bombers, unmanned scouts and other planes in Guam, according to People's Daily correspondent in Washington, August 24.

The deployment should be a result of a strategy report reflecting the US national defense in past four years published on last November 1, which discussed the methods of keeping military balance in Asia, the commander said in a Pentagon meeting.

He later told press that the Andersen Air Force Base in Guam now mainly serves as a gas station. It has excellent basic facilities but no plane is deployed by the Air Forces in the past. He is now engaged in active discussions with air officials to reach his goal. Under his proposal, the military aircraft to be deployed include F-22 fighter made by Lockheed Martin which can evade the surveillance of radar, Boeing 767 tanker aircraft, boeing C-17 air-freighter, some bombers and the Global Hawk, a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial reconnaissance system developed by NorthropGrumman company.

To show the "concerning" of the US it should doubtless strengthen military forces in Guam, the commander said. The US must modernize its Guam air base if it still wants to play a role in Asia.

The report last year didn't point out Chinese mainland directly, but mentioned possible "regional power" developing military force that may pose threat to the stability of certain areas highly concerning US national interests. After release of the report US officials has confirmed that nuclear submarines are to be deployed in Guam and other reports said that cruise missile will also be stored there.
