Top Chinese Legislator Meets Austrian Counterpart

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met with Ludwig Bieringer, president of the Austrian Federal Council, Monday in Beijing.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met with Ludwig Bieringer, president of the Austrian Federal Council, Monday in Beijing.

Li said China had always attached importance to developing and strengthening its friendly relations with Austria based on equality, mutual benefit and respect.

He said effective communication and cooperation between the two countries had greatly promoted their prosperity and development.

Li spoke highly of efforts by the Austria-China Friendship Association and the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries to foster mutual understanding and friendship, as well as non-governmental exchanges and cooperation.

The living standards of the Chinese people had greatly improved, Li said, but some places, especially the western regions, needed further development.

Austrian and other European friends were welcome to visit China,to explore and to take part in the development of the western regions.

Bieringer said that he had witnessed many changes in China, and was pleased to see China's modernization and the development of Sino-Austrian relations.

Bieringer said Austria appreciated the positive role that China played in maintaining world peace. Austria also attached much importance to cooperation and development between Austria and China, referring to the friendly cooperation at congressional, regional and non-governmental level.

Bieringer said he would spare no effort to promote mutual understanding and friendly relations between the two countries.
