China's top legislator, Li Peng, expressed hope Monday in Beijing that cooperation between China and Moldova will be further developed by both sides.

Li, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, made the remarks when meeting with visiting Eugenia Ostapciuk, president of the Parliament of Moldova.

Li said he was glad to receive the guests on the eve of Moldova's national day and on the 10th anniversary of the forging of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The peoples of China and Moldova shared a long history of friendship in spite of their geographical distance and varied domestic situations.

The two nations treated each other with respect and equality and shared common opinions on many important regional and international issues, Li said.

Equality, mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation were the themes of the development of China-Moldova ties, Li said.

Li briefed Ostapciuk on China's domestic situation, the mechanism and mission of the NPC, saying exchanges and cooperation between the two parliaments were key to the friendly relationship.

Ostapciuk said the parliament of Moldova attached great importance to Moldova-China ties and the Moldovan people had a special relationship with the Chinese people.

She spoke highly of China's economic growth and said she hoped to promote bilateral ties by enhancing cooperation.
