President of Zanzibar of the United Republic of Tanzania Amani Abeid Karume said Tuesday that Zanzibar is willing to strengthen economic and trade cooperation with China and that there is great potential for both sides to tap.

Karume made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua at Dar es Salaam International Airport upon his return from a five-day official visit to China which he described as "very fruitful."

Karume said his meetings with President Jiang Zemin, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Li Ruihuan as well as Vice President Hu Jintao are bound to give a new impetus to the development of bilateral relations.

He said his China tour gave himself an opportunity to see the economic achievements scored by the Chinese people in recent years, adding China's experience in finding a suitable path for its economic construction is very enlightening to Zanzibar.

The Zanzibar president extended thanks for China's generous help to Zanzibar in the past years.

An agreement on economic and technology cooperation between Zanzibar and China is a further step towards further cooperation of the two sides, Karume said.

Besides Beijing, Karume also visited the island province of Hainan, China's largest special economic zone, and Shenzhen, the commercial center in southern China.

During his visit in Haikou, the capital city of Hainan, and Shenzhen, Karume called on local entrepreneurs to invest in Zanzibar, which he said offers considerable opportunities in the sectors of infrastructure, agriculture, fishing, as well as processing industries.

Karume paid an official visit to China from Aug. 21 to 25 at the invitation of Hu Jintao.
