'Suspicious Powder' Found in Former US Vice President's Office

A "suspicious white powder" was found Tuesday in an envelope that was sent to the office of former US Vice President Al Gore in Nashville, Tennessee state, Gore's office said.

A "suspicious white powder" was found Tuesday in an envelope that was sent to the office of former US Vice President Al Gore in Nashville, Tennessee state, Gore's office said.

Tennessee authorities are testing the white substance to determine if it contains anthrax, an Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) official said. Investigators believe the whitepowder was sent as a hoax, but the FBI has not confirmed that officially.

The envelope was opened by Gore's office manager, Mary Patterson. After finding the white powder, Gore's Tennessee director, Robert McLarty, immediately turned off the office air conditioning and contacted local authorities, who dispatched a hazardous-materials team to the site in the city's Loews Hotel.

Patterson, the only person who came into direct contact with the substance, said the package was a smaller-than-usual envelope,typically used to write personal correspondence.

Gore's office will remain closed at least until test results come back in four days. Gore, who is vacationing with his wife Tipper Gore in Washington state, was notified of the incident immediately.
